Singing as a Hobby and Way of Self-Expression Essay
Among the hobbies I became interested in during my studies is singing. It is probably a rather specific hobby, but muttering songs under my nose or singing in the shower calms me down. It is a good way to relieve stress, mostly in solitude and without disturbing other people. In my video, I tried to reflect on the feelings that singing in the shower evokes in me.
I want to draw attention to the feeling of lightness and free my head from serious thoughts. I need to have a source of relaxation and nonchalance during my studies, and singing is great for letting me do my things without any tension. My hobby does not require any skills, just my desire. I suppose I may not be good at singing, and some notes may sound funny. I do not have a sense of deadlines, rush, or a desire to succeed and be the best, but I get satisfaction and feel comfortable.
Among the paintings that remind me of singing is The Scream . As far as I know, Edvard Munch painted it several times with different techniques (“The Scream”). I am struck by such zeal, and I realize that it is not achievable for me. I am not interested in achieving mastery in my singing and have not even thought about it. There are talented people besides me, and I do not want to get on the stage because I fear losing the pleasure of the hobby.
I would like to say that my hobby is simple, and I would never make it a professional career. I may not be motivated enough, but I do not want to have straight-A student syndrome or any anxiety that I am not good enough. I have learned from the Van Gogh example that there are more valuable things, and if a hobby comes at the expense of mental health, it is rational to give it up.

Introduction:
Hobbies are of different kinds and each person would be having different kind of hobbies. Singing, dancing, painting, photography, cooking, gardening and the list is just endless.
It basically depends on the interest of the person on what kind of hobby they possess. In my case, I would say that my hobby is Singing and I just love to sing at every possible chance that I could.
Why singing:
Right from my childhood, I used to love songs and I used to listen to many different kinds of songs. Then when I started picking up on the lyrics, my parents realized that I really had a passion for music. Music classes were searched and finally I was being put to one, under a well-trained teacher. From then on, I never looked back. I was taught from the basics to Carnatic, western, light music and so on. I just fell in love with music each time I learnt something new. The training did help me to get my vocals and modulations right and this enabled me to take part in various competitions that came up, during my childhood.
I have attended so many competitions and I was so glad that in a few of them I could win and beat my competitors while few others I could not and hence could learn my mistakes.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
I started taking up singing seriously and with lots of encouragement and support from friends and family, I did make it to bigger heights. I had shows that I could perform and it was indeed a turning path for me at a young age.

Singing as a Hobby and Way of Self-Expression Essay
1. introduction.
It is important to have a hobby because it gives a person an identity. When a person has a hobby, it lets others know what kind of person they are and what they like to do with their free time. Having a hobby can also help a person socialize by getting them involved with other people that have the same hobbies. Additionally, a hobby keeps a person active, both physically and mentally. Without a hobby, a person can become very bored with life. Boredom can be overcome with a new interest or activity. Painting may be a passion of yours and can be a very satisfying and rewarding way of spending your free time. It is one of a few activities that can be very relaxing yet it can absorb you entirely. A hobby gives you something to look forward to, it can be simply getting to your next chess club meeting or getting the first Saturday of the month off for a train convention. Overall, hobbies are an essential part of anyone's life and add fun that can be shared with family and friends. Like painting, singing is a form of self-expression that is an effective stress relief and very therapeutic. Self-expression is where an individual can express how they feel and what they are thinking. Self-expression can take many forms. It might be telling someone how you feel, talking to yourself, or keeping a personal diary. Different forms of creativity also count as a form, for example, cooking, writing, painting, or music. Music can be a very effective way to express oneself as it covers such a huge range of human emotions and it can be done in many ways. With a huge variety of music genres and styles, different types of singing can fill the expressive needs of various people. Depending on how you are feeling, you may sing different types of songs in different ways. Positive energy, happiness, and relaxation can be effectively conveyed through uplifting or humorous songs. Singing is an effective way for stress and tension release and can be done in anger or sadness just as effectively. Ballads and slow tempo music can be a very moving way of expression, particularly when written from personal experiences. Generally, the lyric content in music has significant weight on the emotional expression. The ability to express yourself through music is a great skill and can be a very moving or even life-changing experience. Music and song have always been a powerful force over people and have been the catalyst for many changes in history.
1.1 Importance of Hobbies
Some might ask whether it is really that essential to have a hobby. This section will briefly look at the various reasons why a hobby should be incorporated into one's lifestyle. First of all, a hobby provides an individual with an immediate sense of gratification. For example, when a hobby such as photography is taken up, the creation of a tangible finished product in the form of a landscape portrait provides great satisfaction. Singing a song or learning the chords to a favorite song on a guitar also provides immediate results and hence self-satisfaction. This is a sharp contrast to the long yawning hours spent in class or at work, where results and satisfaction are often long-term and far in between. This immediate return of personal satisfaction experienced through a hobby also serves to boost an individual's self-esteem. With the results from whatever limited resources and abilities one has, one can produce something of a higher standard than he/she would ever have imagined possible. At differing levels in various fields of hobbies, people are found to surpass their own expectations. This experience is vital for nurturing the belief that goals and standards are reachable with hard work and commitment. This is because success breeding success, surpassing a set standard with a better one provides a sense of achievement and enhanced self-esteem. Without a hobby, an individual may become stuck in the rat race of everyday life, unaware of a higher potential and standard that can be reached.
1.2 The Power of Self-Expression
Timberlake states that it is often necessary for one to place his/her emotions in some form of release; such an individual must attain a secure way of expressing him/herself, a way to "vent". For me, this release has always been music. Not only has music acted as an influential factor in the way I act, but in the way I choose to live my life. Listening to music spurs up the most personal, and often most vivid of memories. I recall specific events, remember exact feelings, or envision particular images to mind when hearing a certain song. All of this comes from the power of self-expression that music invokes. Whether the musician is conveying a particular message, or evoking a certain emotion, this form of communication is powerful and unique. It is a channel of free expression that holds no boundaries. I love the fact that I can listen to a song and experience an unfamiliar mood. This often sparks my curiosity and sends me in search for the apparent or true meaning behind the song. I am a huge fan of lyrics and I feel that the best music is a poetic art with a deep personal message. This emotional link to music is what I have always tried to capture in my singing. My most memorable and best performances have come when I've been so engulfed in the song that it has caused an emotional reaction. I can recall feeling a lump in my throat, or even shedding a tear during such performances. This is because music is a truly powerful tool and it has the ability to touch our hearts. It is said that music has healing abilities, it can act as a remedy for elating or soothing one's mood. This too is something I have always tried to convey in my singing. A song to me is the ultimate expression in musical art; it's a story, or a message, often a mirrored experience of its writer and can take on many forms. This diversity has allowed me to explore and express many different emotions in my singing, from happy and carefree, to dark and melancholy. Overall, music is a universal language and a free form of expression that I have always been passionate about.
2. Benefits of Singing as a Hobby
There are numerous benefits to singing as a hobby, many of which pertain to physical or mental well-being. The physiological benefits of singing as a hobby have been well-documented. Many people breathe incorrectly, using only a small portion of their lung capacity. When singing, breath control is used to maintain constant airflow, taking in air and exhaling in a controlled manner to support the sound. Singing often makes use of this full range of motion, and in time can increase lung capacity. Deep breathing is also a good way to cleanse the lymphatic system. When the diaphragm moves downward, it massages the internal organs, acting as a pump for the lymphatic system. This is the only way to move the lymphatic fluid so that harmful substances can be filtered out through the body. For those with asthma, singing can often help to control breathing through exercising the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm. By learning to breathe more effectively, many asthmatics can even reduce their intake of medication. Singing has also been shown to benefit sufferers of Parkinson's disease. Preliminary studies at the University of California at San Francisco have indicated that singing shows significant improvement in the speech ability of those with Parkinson's disease. Singing activates the right side of the brain, the area associated with music and creativity. The left side of the brain is used for language processes, while the right side is used to help create the music. By using this area of the brain, singing can help to access speech functions that are left unharmed by the disease. This can develop into the improved ability to communicate through song.
2.1 Physical and Mental Well-being
Singing is considered an aerobic activity in which the body and the heart are fully engaged, and this, in turn, encourages general overall fitness. The improvement of lung capacity is beneficial for singers and non-singers alike. For people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or a related lung disease, singing lessons could be a safer alternative to pulmonary rehabilitation. Singing can be most useful after incidents such as a stroke, as the American Heart Association explains that singing helps improve speech and motor coordination, which are affected in this sort of disease. An article detailing findings from research on how choir singing positively influences health and well-being in the Australian Choral Directors Association's Chorally states, "There are clear psychological gains from the sense of inclusion and acceptance with others and in having a shared goal, understanding, and purpose." The study mentioned includes evidence that choir singers felt improved self-esteem and mood as an immediate result of singing in a group and also through a better understanding of perseverance and discipline. Another reason why people may "feel good" after singing upbeat or happy songs is the release of endorphins. Singing is known to release quite a large amount of endorphins, the hormone released in the brain and acting as a "feel-good" substance. Dopamine is also released during singing, which is a neurotransmitter in the brain, again causing happy feelings. He says levels of these chemicals increase when singing, and this has been associated with a release of stress and an improvement in mood. Singing can be one of the best ways to recover from trauma and keep positive and happy. There is significant evidence to suggest that singing helps people be in a good mental state. An article discussing "Psychological Benefits of Choral Singing" in Music Educators Journal says, "Recent research points to the conclusion that singing in a choir is an effective means of improving mood states and overall quality of life." This was also found in several different studies, which found that control over mood and getting into a desired emotional state was heightened in singers rather than non-singers. This is even more so for people who are suffering from mental illness; it has been found that the social act of singing with others can greatly reduce anxiety and the depressive effects of illness. The American Music Therapy Association supports this and claims that for these groups, music and singing can act as a form of expressive therapy. Sita Magnuson, MME, MT-BC says, "By sharing in a creative experience, [clients and therapists] can explore, reflect, and build skills such as focus and attention, fine and gross motor, organizational, and in the case of music, auditory processing." This is especially beneficial for, let's say, an elderly choir. It is a therapy method that is easy to engage in and not physically or mentally strenuous.
2.2 Boosting Self-Confidence
There's no doubt about it. Singing boosts a person’s self-confidence. When a person sings, it’s generally an audience of one, unless you are in a choir or group. This means that you have to be your own audience and that involves listening to yourself and deciding if you like what you hear. Most people are their own worst critics and this can be tough, but constantly striving to improve your singing and fine tune your performance means being self-critical in a constructive way. Research carried out by Professor Graham Welch from the University of London’s Institute of Education shows that singing can help a child to feel confident in more areas of their life than just singing. "Our research suggests that the stigma associated with not being able to sing or enjoy music is likely to affect a person’s ability to become a confident and effective member of society in other areas," he says. The findings indicated that this was particularly a problem for boys. His study is due to be published this year in a new book "Music, Education and Society," published by OUP.
2.3 Developing Vocal Skills
2.3 Developing Vocal Skills: Singing is a skill that can be developed. A large part of the skills required to sing well is based on a good understanding of how the voice works and a lot of practice. Anyone who has a voice can learn to sing, and with practice, they can become a good singer. When developing vocal skills, it is important for one to get accurate information on how the voice works. Without proper guidance, it is possible for an individual to damage their voice and hinder their singing. While a private teacher is the best way to get the right information on singing, there is still a lot of information available to those who cannot afford one. It is important to research the credibility of the vocal information being given. There are many methods to teaching vocal skills, and there are a number of different schools of thought. One of the most common methods for people who are just starting to learn how to sing is to join a choir. Choirs are a good way to begin developing vocal skills, as singers are required to learn to sing their own part while simultaneously being able to hold a tune with others. Singing in a choir is a good way to develop a sense of musicianship. Choirs provide a good introduction to music theory and the skills required to read music. These are very valuable skills to have and are highly transferable into many other musical areas. Singing in a choir teaches many singers the ability to harmonize. This is a major part of developing vocal skills, and many singers strive to become good harmony singers.
3. Singing as a Form of Self-Expression
When we sing, emotional expression is given the wings of flight; there is nothing quite like it. Oftentimes, no matter if others are within earshot or not, the simple practice of attempting to sing a difficult song or singing a song in a different style will allow a singer to delve into the various emotions expressed within the song. Connecting one's own life experiences to the emotions expressed by the song is an excellent way for a singer to 'vent' any repressed emotions and can be incredibly therapeutic. Most people who sing have at least one song that they feel describes a situation or event that they've experienced in their lives. They will adopt this song as a personal anthem. Whether the song is about a painful event and serves as a method of reliving the past, or whether it helps to evoke fond memories, the song becomes a shorthand method for the singer to quickly reconnect with the emotions felt during that time. It is often easier for a person to express their emotions through a song rather than by speaking about it. Because of this, others may not expect an ultra-clear and concise description of the singer's feelings. An astute listener who is aware that a singer sings to express themselves may pick up on subtle changes in the singer's tonal quality and realize the singer's mood, thus opening the door to a heart-to-heart conversation about how the singer is feeling.
3.1 Connecting with Emotions
Many people look to music as a means of escape - singing along with lyrics in the car, performing in karaoke bars, or even just sitting in a comfortable chair with a pair of headphones on. This is because music has often been found to serve as a reflective agent, pervasive enough to have the potential to alter a person's mood or state of mind. There are many different reasons why people listen to music, most of which can be related to their current emotional state. Whether it is to calm the nerves, invoke feelings of excitement, or to help aid an individual through a tough break up, music has the ability to do it all. When taking a look at music as a whole and the many ways in which it is produced, it should be noted that music is largely an expressive outlet. For example, there is typically a difference between writing a song about being happy and writing a song with a happy melody. More often than not, the outcome of the song reflects the mood of the writer during the time of creation. Trying to understand what makes people listen to certain types of music can greatly be understood by looking at the different ways in which the music can reflect a person’s emotional state.
3.2 Telling Personal Stories
With the advent of things that are sung, came the things that are meant to be spoken and written, may it be in the form of language or in the form of song lyrics. Lyrics are words from a song, and these words are mostly made to tell a story and pour someone's feelings. Those feelings are the emotions of the song creators themselves or someone else's. Let us say that someone creates a song but with words that are written by someone else, that means someone else's stories have been expressed through the song creators. Now, why did the lyric makers choose a form of story? A story or chronicle is a series of events told by someone or something. Thus, in a broader way or interpretation, it does not really have to be a long series of events told by someone, but more likely an event experienced by someone or something. Putting it together, both an event or a series of events that have been experienced are just the same. Therefore, a story is an event or a series of events that somebody has experienced. Now, let's say that someone else's stories are being expressed by some song creators. It means that the song creators are expressing someone else's stories. Now, this is interesting because storytelling is a way to express something, and storytelling has always been one of the earliest forms of presentational art. Then, what about singing a story? Singing a story is more likely a lullaby or a traditional song that tells a story event, more likely a bard song. Now, everyone can sing, and when someone who is a non-story song creator sings a story event, it means that this person is expressing someone else's stories. It is quite complex, but an example would simplify everything. For example, a little girl sings a lullaby about a hero in a legendary tale that she heard, and the hero is doing something valiant to clear the world from wit. The little girl sings the song because the lullaby is telling a story of valiance with the world clearing from stupidity, which means the hero is doing a valiant act to make the world a better place. This lullaby is actually told by the girl's father to her, and the hero's act in the story actually represents what the father hopes for his daughter. This is only an unconscious act of story song expression, but it contains a lot of meanings and can give impact to the song itself and the person who experiences the story.
3.3 Building Relationships through Music
Excluding "Covering Songs," the majority of modern music, including every genre from alternative rock to hip-hop, seems to be completely centered around the one making it and not the listener. Emphasis is heavily put on the marketing of albums and the artist via music videos, interviews, etc. - and that's where the money is made. That's fine for well-established musicians, but what about new bands/musicians who have talent to be noticed but are completely unknown? The most fantastic music in the world means nothing if no one is there to listen to it, and it's incredibly difficult to get people to listen to your music if the artists themselves aren't already personal friends with them. This is an unfortunate catch-22 for many bands with great potential. One potential solution is that musicians can create cheap "DIY" recordings and spread them via the internet. With the online medium, it's possible that some savvy online marketing could lead to the music being noticed by someone with the ability to promote the band, thus giving the band a wider audience and a chance to make a living off their music. But how successful can using the internet to share music recordings really be, and how does this compare to more traditional methods such as playing local shows? The following is a case study of my experiences using both methods and how doing so has affected the popularity and success of my band at various levels.

Long Essay on My Hobby Singing 200-500 Words
My hobbies are Singing and listening to music. But singing is my favorite hobby. When I was 4 years old, my parents enrolled me in a Music Class in our Apartment. Our Music teacher’s name was Mrs.Sheela and used to teach me the basics of Music and Singing. From then I used to practice whatever my teacher taught me in Music Class whenever I am free. I used to sing while traveling in the school bus, while walking on the roads etc., This practice turned singing into my hobby.
Singing always keeps me fresh and singing songs helps me forget all the problems. I have a good vocal. I relate my vocal range from F3 to F5 which is an Alto that means low female voice. Whenever some functions or occasions take place in our house or neighborhood, they invite me to grace the occasion with a welcome song. Initially, I used to hesitate to sing in front of others, but now I enjoy singing in front of everyone. Also, my friends encourage me to sing during the lunch breaks and they enjoy my songs and have lunch.
I simply smile while singing a song which makes the listeners/observers smile as well. I have also participated and bagged few prizes in singing and music-related competitions which were organized in our school.
Besides that my mom is also a renowned singer and she received many awards for the same. But she compromised her dream to take care of my family. Whenever I bag an award or prize from a singing competition, my mom is the first person who will be happy about that. My mom and I enjoy singing together and forget about the time. My mom also suggests to me the correction of tone and rhythm here and there when I am singing along. Sometimes, I feel that I am fulfilling her dream.
Since my Voice range is alto, I stuck only to singing melodious songs. But I dream to become a DJ or pop star in the future. For that I am practicing pop, pop alternative singing methods as well. Once I get familiar with the pop style methods, I will disclose to my friends that I can sing pop songs as well. Someday I wish to become a great singer in the world.
