greek mythology family tree assignment

Are you fans of Greek Mythology and the stories of the Greek gods in your house? My kids LOVE learning about it and we have some fun books that we have read over the years. Today I want to show you how to make a Greek Mythology Family Tree. My son has read so much about Greek Mythology that he pretty much had this family tree memorized.

Greek Mythology Family Tree - Greek gods family tree

Greek mythology offers up some of the greatest, most epic tales ever. The stories of larger-than-life characters, from gods and goddesses to mortals and everyone in between, serve as a great starting point to get your child  interested in reading . This family tree activity introduces him to some of the main characters in Greek mythology and is sure to entice him to follow their stories through to the end!

Who is in the Greek Mythology Family Tree:

Start by researching Greek mythological characters. We love reading about them in our  D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths . The front page of the book has a Greek god family tree that we referenced for our project.

greek myths book for kids

Also, you can search online and find more information about the following 14 ancient Greek gods and the two Titan gods that started the Olympian line:

Hades- god of the underworld

Poseidon- god of the sea

Hestia- goddess of the hearth

Demeter- goddess of the harvest

Zeus- god of the sky, lightning and thunder

Hera- Queen of the gods, goddess of marriage and birth

Artemis- goddess of the hunt

Apollo- god of healing, medicine, archery, music and poetry

Athena- goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill.

Hephaestus- god of fire, metalworking, forges, stone masonry, and sculpture

Aphrodite- goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, passion and procreation

Hermes- god of trade, thieves, travelers, sports, athletes, and border crossings, guide to the Underworld

Dionysus- god of wine, vegetation, pleasure, festivity

Ares- god of war

Cronus- King of the Titans and the god of time

Rhea- Mother of the gods, goddess of female fertility, motherhood, and generation

Together with your child, read about these mighty rulers and their feuds for power. Isn’t it hard to believe they’re all in the same family?

How to Make a Greek Mythology Family Tree

Time to assemble the family tree! You can start with Cronus and Rhea or Gaea and Uranus at the top of the poster board. Use my printable characters to make your own!

greek mythology family tree assignment

Then, using a marker and ruler, he’ll draw branches that extend from them to their children: Hades, Poseidon, Hestia, Demeter, Zeus and Hera.

Ask your child to continue extending the family tree to Zeus and Hera’s child, Ares, as well as Zeus’s other children: Athena, Artemis, Apollo, Dionysus, Hermes and Aphrodite. Aphrodite is off to the side in ours because nobody knew who her parents were. Hephaestus is actually Hera’s son, but not with Zeus.

greek mythology lesson

Take a look at the family tree together and discuss how they’re all connected. There’s a lot more to these mythologicalfigures than revealed here, so encourage him to discover more of their awe-inspiring tales!

I made a printable set of info cards about each of these characters, with a few extra famous ones added in. There are 23 Greek Mythology Trading cards in all. You can use these to make your own Greek Mythology Family Tree!

Greek mythology family tree with primordial deities, titans and olympians.

Confused about how the Greek gods are related to each other? A Greek mythology family tree will help you understand their very complex family relations. Your will find two of such complete Greek gods family trees further down on this page.

The Complexity of the Greek Gods’ Family Relations… Is Everybody Having Children with Everybody?

When I first set about to make a family tree for the Greek gods, I was very confused. For instance, in one article I would read that Uranus was the consort of Gaia. And then in the next article, I would find that Uranus was the son of Gaia. How does that figure?

Well, both things are true! How about that!

The Greek gods (just like the Egyptian gods and pharoes) didn’t mind having children with their own offspring as well as their own sister or brother. You could say that they were very open minded that way. Also I guess it’s a way of keeping the god and goddess blood running in family without the risk of human dilution.

Particularly the fertile ruler of the Olympian gods (Zeus) didn’t waist any time and had many, many children.

Zeus had children with his aunts (Mnemosyme and Themis), his cousins (Metis and Leto), his sisters (Hera and Demeter) and his own daughter (Persephone). Also he had many mistresses who also provided him with a forest of offspring.

If you want a family tree particularly centered around Zeus, you might like this page where you’ll find two Zeus family trees.

The Greek Mythology Family Tree with all Relevant Gods

Greek mythology family tree free to print with both primordials, Titans and Olympians.

This family tree of the Greek gods is ideal to print. Just save the image on your computer and print it. It already has the right size for an A4 piece of paper. The image is 26 cm x 17,54 cm in 220 dpi (which is fairly high resolution – meaning good print quality).

In the family tree above, I’ve tried to squeeze as many gods in as I possibly could. Below each name, you’ll find their primary attribute. All Greek gods were gods of something, you see (just like e.g. the Egyptian gods or Nordic gods).

At the top of the tree, you will find the primordial deities . The primordial deities are considered the first order of gods from which all other gods descend. In the family tree above, the primordial gods are colored blue.

The Primordial deities are said to stem from Chaos, a void, a nothingness. Most famous of the primordial deities are probably the parents of the Titans: Gaia and Uranus. Other primordials are Tartarus, Eros, Erebus, Aether, Nyx, Chronos, Ananke, Hemera, Phanes, Pontus, Thalassa, (Hypnos, Thanatos, Nemesis, Nesoi, Ouera).

In the middle of the tree in yellow, you will find the Titans , the second order of gods. Among the Titans, you will find both a first and a second generation. The first generation consist of 12 Titans (6 males and 6 females) that are all the offspring of the primordial deities, Uranus and Gaia. The females, the Titanesses, are Rhea, Phoebe, Mnemosyne, Theia, Tethys and Themis. The males are Cronus, Hyperion, Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, and Iapetus.

The other Titans are children of the first generation of Titans. The second generation consist of Metis, Helios, Eos, Selene, Atlas, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Menoetius, Perses, Astraeus, Pallas, Lelantos, Leto and Asteria.

Further down the tree you will find the Olympians. The Olympian Gods are probably the ones you know the best and have heard about the most. At least that was the case with me. The Olympians are the reddish boxes in the illustration.

As there were 12 Titans, there are also 12 Olympians. Oh, you may say, but in the illustration, there are more red boxes than just 12. Yes, and you’re right.

Sources agree that there are 12 Olympian gods, however, they are not in complete agreement as to who they are. Thus I’ve plotted ind all possible candidates. (This is the difficult thing about making a Greek mythology family tree: the sources don’t always agree, so you have make a decision as to who you follow.) The 12 Olympians that most agree on are: Zeus, Hera, Demeter, Aphrodite, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Hephaestus, Hermes and Hestia.

Other Olympians are: Dionysus, Hades, Persephone and Pan.

In purple you’ll find some of Zeus’ countless of mistresses that weren’t considered either Primordial, Titans or Olympian. Some weren’t even gods.

At the bottom of the family tree in green , you’ll find some of Zeus’ offspring that like the ‘purple’ mistresses were not part of the Primordial, Titan or Olympian order of gods.

On this particular page I have only just scratched the surface of the orders of the Greek gods. If you want to learn more about the orders and find family tree for each one of them, I recommend that you go to this page where I have made a family tree for each of the orders i.e. one for the Primordial deities, one for the Titans and one for the Olympians.

A Greek Gods Family Tree with Images of the Gods

Greek gods family tree with Olympians, Titans and Primordial deities. Illustrated with pictures of the gods.

This family tree image is also designed to be printable and you’ll find the dimensions ideal for this: 25 cm x 19,23 cm in 210 dpi.

The family tree above is a little bit less detailed than the first one on this page, however, personally I find it a little more fun as I put in pictures from paintings of the gods.

However, as some of the gods are more know than others it sometimes proved very difficult to find an illustration of some of them. And sometimes sources didn’t agree on who it was on the picture, so please bear over with me if you don’t agree with who a particular illustration features.

Just like in the first family tree, I’ve divided the illustration into three sections, the Primordial at the top, Titans in the middle and Olympians at the bottom. In this tree I’ve only put in members of the three god orders. Nothing else.

I hope you enjoyed reading this page as much as I enjoyed making it. Making the family trees required quite a bit of research but as I love diving into new subjects and learning new stuff, this was a true joy. And plus, now I’m that wiser. And so are you! 🙂

Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses Packet

by Liesl - Homeschool Den

We have a new packet to share with you on the Ancient Greek gods and goddesses! This new unit includes the major Olympian gods and touches on some of the famous mythology of Ancient Greece.

Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses Packet

This has been a really fun unit. The Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses Packet includes many different activities from notebook pages to interactive notebook pages, matching cards and an Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses board game!  Plus, there are project cards so that kids can create their own poster-sized Greek God Family Tree!

The main gods and goddesses covered in this unit include:

Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses Lapbook Pieces

  • Cronus and Rhea

Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses Activities

For the past couple of months, we have spent time learning about Ancient Greece. We used Suzanne Strauss Art’s book, The Story of Ancient Greece ( affiliate link ) as our spine. I really loved this book and so did the kids. There were parts that made me go… “Wait! I didn’t realize that!!” and I taught World History on the high school level for years!  I definitely recommend getting the 4th edition because the quality of the book has gone up considerable. It now includes colorful pictures and maps that we referred to a lot.

Ancient Greece Middle School History Book

Why did we delve into Ancient Greece this past summer? Well, my youngest and I started reading the Percy Jackson series together.  We were reading the Lightning Thief .  The kids decided they didn’t remember that much about the history of Ancient Greece itself, so we jumped into a full unit!

We continued this unit into the fall because our family travels stopped us for a while in the summer. 🙂

Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses Unit - Mythology Packet

  • Aliki’s book, The Gods and Goddesses of Olympus   has beautiful illustrations and the stories about the gods and goddesses are engaging. I really recommend that one!
  • Greek Myths retold by Geraldine McCaughrean (Your library might have it.)
  • D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths   is also a great choice for kids.
  • If your kids are younger 3-6 years old or so, we really loved the First Greek Myths series by Saviour Pirotta. We continually checked them out of the library!!  They are all good. We’ve read  Perseus and the Monstrous Medusa ,  Odysseus and the Wooden Horse ,  The Secret of Pandora’s Box . There is also  King Midas’s Goldfingers.
  • If your kids have read the Percy Jackson series, they might enjoy Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods . My middle daughter loved it so much, she carried it constantly in the car a couple of years ago and read it several times!!  It is narrated by Percy Jackson! A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don’t need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week.

In the packet there are a number of options for the kids to write about what they learned. There are blank notebook pages with and without lines.

As you can see, we opted to use the page as notebook pages and in the picture, you can see my daughter is gluing the description on to the page:

Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses - Mythology

I also included some larger project cards so that students can make their own poster-sized Greek gods and goddesses family tree ! (For copyright reasons “sample” has been written on the image below.)  My youngest daughter did the poster you see below.  There are images of the cyclops and Cerberus included as well (they are just not pictured below).

Greek Gods Family Tree Project Cards

Finally, we spent a bit of time reading about how some of the constellations got their names.  I came across a really neat new game called Constellations – The Game of Stargazing and The Night Sky by Xtronaut Enterprises. ( affiliate link ) This was a big hit with my kids! There are a couple of pages included in the packet about Cassiopeia and Orion.

Constellations - Game and Ancient Greek Mythology

This packet is 40+ pages.

Before I go, I thought I would mention these fun books I got for ED for this unit.  She really enjoyed these “You Choose” ancient Greek myths. In fact, all of my kids really enjoyed them (shhh… even my teenage son enjoyed them!), though they are meant for ages 8-12. These were the ones we got (though there are others).
